A gallery of 109 registered buyers crowded the stands for the Dangarfield Santa Gertrudis 23rd annual sale at Kingswood, Taroom on Monday to compete for the 94 classified and herd bulls on offer at the first sale of Big Red Santa Week.
The total sale draft sold for an average of $7,117 and a top of $37,500, with another four bulls attracting prices between $24,000 and $35,000.
The sale exploded with the five featured opening lots averaging $28,500. All sons of homebred sire, Dangarfield Quarterback (P), the lead lots had been selected as part of the Dangarfield 2011 show team and boasted a string of successes around the circuit. The anticipation had been building around the stud's latest star sire, D Quarterback, and the results of his first release drop did not disappoint, with 15 sons selling to an impressive average of $13,700.
The top price of $37,500 was paid for lot 2, Dangarfield Torrent (AI) (PS), a 26-month-old bull who weighed in at 940kg, boasted an EMA of 127 sq cm and P8 and rib fat measurements of 16mm and 9mm respectively. D Torrent was secured by southern seedstock breeders, Moreton and Francis Rolfe of Hardigreen Park Santa Gertrudis, Wallabadah, NSW, who have recently celebrated 40 years as members of the Santa Gertrudis Breeders' Association.
A past SGBA president, Mr Rolfe commented that the bull appealed to them because of his muscling, neat sheath and his all round impressive raw data. Mr Rolfe also admires the fertility of the Dangarfield herd and the pressure placed on the breeding operation, with D Torrent's dam boasting an average calving interval of 354 days over a total of 9 calves testament to this. As their second purchase from Dangarfield, Torrent will join six other recently acquired top sires in their stud herd of 250 breeders.
The second top priced bull was lot 5, Dangarfield Twister (PS), purchased by Chris and Elisa Fox of Cooinda Santa Gertrudis, Proston for $35,000. D Twister was a 25-month-old bull who weighed in at 938kg with an EMA of 128 sq cm, a P8 measurement of 11mm and rib of 7mm.
A range of seedstock buyers were quick to secure these five stud sire prospects. Lot 1, Dangarfield Thunder (AI) sold for $30,000 to Jason and Kylie Bruggemann, Triple S Santa Gertrudis, Wandoan; lot 4, Dangarfield Typhoon (AI) (PS) sold for $28,000 to Ian Mitchell & Co, Eyriewald Santa Gertrudis, Corfield and lot 3, Dangarfield Tsunami (PS) was picked up by the Bassingthwaighte family of Yarrawonga Waco, Wallumbilla for $12,000.
Stud buyers continued to snap up their sires at high prices throughout the offering with lot 72, the final classified bull, Dangarfield Titan (P) selling for $24,000 to the Rohde family, Allendale Santa Gertrudis, Clifton and lot 37, Dangarfield Tycoon (P) attracting $17,000 from Rick and Alice Greenup, Greenup-Eidsvold Station Santa Gertrudis, Kumbia.
While the competition was strong amongst the seedstock breeders, there was still value to be had for the commercial man, with 34 bulls selling for $4,000 or less.
Volume buyers of the day were repeat clients, the Knudsen family, who as a unit purchased a total of 20 bulls. Ken and Jackie, Kilbeggan, Chinchilla purchased 7 bulls for an average of $6,571, Pete and Shari, Coondarra, Chinchilla paid an average of $5,900 for six sires while Rick and Rebecca, Ulluka, Taroom purchased 8 bulls for an average of $3,188.
Jaletto Pty Ltd, Taroom paid an average of $5,583 for six bulls and Palm Tree Grazing, Taroom picked up five for an average of $4,600.
Another thirteen pasture reared bulls were sold privately after the sale.
Over the past six years, 93pc of the Dangarfield bulls sold at auction have gone to repeat clients and the 2011 sale was no exception, proving the high level of satisfaction and loyalty amongst commercial buyers.

By KATE BOSHAMMER

AFTER widespread heavy rainfall forced the week long postponement of the 22nd annual Dangarfield Santa Gertrudis bull sale to last Monday, the weather pulled out all stops to produce a balmy spring day staging the ideal backdrop for a red hot sale.
Of the 91 bulls offered, 90 sold to a solid average of $5,402 with over 95pc of bulls going to repeat buyers, a great testament to client satisfaction in the Dangarfield product.
The top priced bull, lot 7, Dangarfield Sniper (P) (AI) sold to fellow seedstock breeders, David and Sonya Greenup, Rosevale Santa Gertrudis, Jandowae. The 25-month-old son of Dangarfield Improvement weighed 788kg and scanned an eye muscle area of 123 sq cm with 7mm and 11mm on the rib and rump respectively. Sniper’s dam had an outstanding fertility record, having produced 9 calves with an average calving interval of 360 days.
David Greenup commented it was the bull’s combination of balance, soundness and performance that made him an ideal sire prospect for their own stud herd.
The Joyce family of Gyranda Santa Gertrudis, Theodore purchased lot 37, Dangarfield Spinifex (P) for $19,000. Spinifex is a 23-month-old son of Tookey Creek Platinum (P) who boasted dam data of 7 calves with an average calving interval of 354 days.
